Motets were compositions that consisted of multiple vocal parts: the lowest vocal line was called the tenor, and its melody was derived from existing plainchant. Above the tenor line were vocal lines called the motetus and triplum.

Originally, the motet was a musical composition for two voices, consisting of a new voice added to a voice based on refrains in the Catholic service (Gregorian chants). The new voice was called the motet. Subsequently, the term was applied to the entire composition. WebJESU, MEINE FREUDE (“JESUS, MY JOY” ), BWV 227— This is the longest and most structurally complex of the six motets and is cast in 11 separate movements. While four of the motets call for double choir, Jesu, meine Freude is unusual in being scored for five voice parts, with a second soprano line (a feature it shares with Bach’s Magnificat).
