"Rifled" Foster-type slugs are made to shoot through a smooth bore and do well in them, whereas sabot slugs are made to shoot through a rifled choke tube, or even a rifled barrel, and do very well through those.

As I often shoot grouse when I am carrying my slug guns I try to set them up to shoot both slugs and shot. Thismay not appeal to you at all. WebOct 3, 2009 · As stated before, rifled slugs can be fired through a smoothbore, and smooth, sabot, slugs can be fired through a rifled bore or rifled choke tube. Usually slugs are most accurate with more open chokes. You'll need to shoot your gun at a target, just like a rifle, to find out which slug/choke combination it prefers. WebJul 15, 2024 · The issue with firing buckshot through a full choke has more to do, I think, with the misconception that, because it makes burdshot pattern tighter, it should do the same for buckshot. Unfortunately that's just not the case. Slamming large, round, soft lead balls through a constriction deforms them, sometimes horribly.
